Reading Journal 2

Hello all,
I'd like to assign the second reading journal task from FLIGHTTRAINING.AOPA.ORG
I'd like you to read the story "Delayed Near the Great Lakes" , analyse the pilot’s decisions and the lessons learned then write a response discussing “what would you have done if you had been the pilot?” (max. 150 words)
Your responses are due next Thursday (April, 18th).
Late journal entries will not be accepted. All journal entries should be done on the web. Pen-and-paper submissions will be returned.
Looking forward to reading your responses,
Have a great week!

  1. First of all, I would not make the trip if weather conditions are very bad. Also, I will never risk my children safety and take them with me in cold, rainy and icy day.

Secondly, pilot made the biggest mistake when he delayed the flight 2 hours. He should not make the trip after that because he didnt made another plan. So I will either made a good plan or cancel the trip.

Thirdly, he didnt chose safe path and go to Kankakee. I wouldnt gamble my life and chose the safe path which is Jasper County. Pilot let external pressures to effect his decisions and made bad decisions. But I wouldnt let that happen to me because I dont care or get effected by external pressure.

Lastly, I would not trust the ATC because they sometimes give wrong information. I would go to nearest airport not the ATC’s said.

  2. If I were in place of the pilot, I would first think about the necessity of the flight at such conditions. If it would not cause an important thing, I would not fly the airplane in these bad conditions. If the flight was really necessary, I would think about all the bad scenarios and be ready to solve the possible problems. However I would not depart at a different time than I planned. That is why the time change could cause different weather conditions, which I did not expected. Even so, if I decided to fly the airplane, I would be more careful than any time. I would do my best to stay calm in problematic situations. And I would try to communicate with the ATC to solve the problems easier. Another thing I would do is to keep my passengers (my daughters) calm, too. At last if I succeed to arrive the ground safely, I would analyze the flight in details and gain experience from this flight.

  3. If I were the Pilot, I would have told my daughters not to go school on that day or told my ex-wife to bring them earlier so that they could come on precise departure time and the flight would not be delayed. Departing on that schedule when the weather had not been heavy overcast might not make my flight to Gary more problematic and my flight to Hancock as well.

However, if I had to fly on that condition, I would have continued my plan to land at Jasper Country Airport since the ATC have cleared and provided vectors to approach it. Another way, I might land at any airport with acceptable instrument approach. Furthermore, I would have re-asked the ATC’s confirmation for runway clearance including the clearance from slush or other things which could prevent me for a safe landing.

  4. If I were him,I would not fly while the weather was in very bad condition.
Before I plane to fly,I should consider and realize about any condition that can be the harmful on flight.I will not venture or do something that abuse the flight'law because that can lead my flight be in dangerous. That mean,My life, property and my parent are in risk.

Whatever,if I were in that situation,I would turn back and wait until the weather were better.

  5. First of all,if my guests were late for the flight , i would not do the flight because everything has to be suitable to the book but if I fly I certainly would check out all of the routes to my target place. If there happened any kind of weather situation i could use the other ways to arrive there.
He tried to go Houghton from İndianapolis , firt 50 miles were fine for the flight he were at 6000 altitude and there was little turbulance and rain.I am not sure but if I were him I could contact ATC before all things happened because I had to be aware of the dropping of the temperature and had to check out all possibilities. Let's think I could not realize all things, when ATC warned me to do something I would do all orders step by step because they have a chance to see every weather situations and if I do not obey the rules , I mean if I do not listen to ATC , everyone can blame on me even if there was a little mistake done by me, and ATC suggested him to fly Kankakee because of the better weather , everything was great after this.

  6. If I were the pilot, first I would obey the ATC. Because without doubt ATC has much more than experience than I have. Lots of aircrafts are being guided by ATC everyday. The second thing I would do is planning an exact flight and minimize the changes about flight plan. Because in the air I have limitted opportunities. For example the fuel of the aircraft may finish if I extend the flight time. So I have to use my opportunities carefully. The last thing I would do is concentrating at my work. Probably he was thinking about his girls while flying. If I concentrate at my work less that brings mistakes with itself. That couses unintended results.

  7. There was a big problem before the flight. Pilots girl delayed his flight at least two hours. In aviation two hours is realy important because weather conditions shows a change in hours.
If I were a pilot, I would communicate with air trafic control again becanuse my flight was delayed two hours. He had to got new weather condition. Secondly I did not climb 6000 feet without knowing the weather because I had a small plane and this altitude was hazardous for headwind. Otherwise you can encounter difficulties. When I got difficulties I could communicate ATC again. Pilot always be in touch with ATC.
Thirdly I analysed the conditions and then I made a plan for escape the difficulties. Finally he learned new things from his mistake.

  8. First of all I'm happy to know the plane hadnt a accident in a dangerous flight like that.
If I were that pilot I wouldnt risk my family's life by doing such a crazy landing.Because he has already known the weather going to be cold in the distination and it's going to be dark because of the weather and time.Actually I really didnt understand why he wanted to land on Gary. Its not very wise idea for waiting good weather in Gary.Instead of this,I wouldnt fly at that night, fly on the next day.Or I can change the flight plan so that could go warmer path of weather. For example turn back to south and then fly around the storm or clouds to avoid icing.

  9. Fundamentally, if I were him I wouldn’t do anything without being sure all sorts of thing.Even though weather conditions were adverse, pilot wanted to fly. In my estimation, his first inaccuracy was here just because the weather conditions are one of the most significant ones in flights. It means that you cannot condone these in aeronautics. Secondarily, second inexactitude that was mistaken by the pilot is departure time. If you are a pilot, you have to obey your schedule in that every arrangement is planned about time which included the weather conditions, air traffic, take-off and landing etc. In this incident, even though the passengers which included the pilot’ s girls were late the pilot kept going to fly. If I were him I wouldn’ t fly. Thirdly and the last error is whether he should have landed at Jasper Country or not. If I were in his shoes, I’ d land at Jasper Country without any hesitation. During the flight the pilot ran into some difficulties , instead of receiving aid, the pilot tried to overcome these difficulties on his own. In my opinion, if he fell into line with ATC’ s assistance, he wouldn’ t experience such a bad consequence. To put in a nutshell, I’ m really ensure that if I were him I would want to receive support from the ATC.

  10. If I were a pilot, I would check all of the cases and I would get all of the information which was about this flight from authorized person. I tried to be more careful than my other flight because I was going to fly with my daughter and also there was a different conditions than normal flight especially weather conditions. While I was flying as a pilot, I reported ATC to this extra ordinary condition. I could do what they said because I was not sure that I could decide correct decision. After I implemented what ATC said, aircraft could be landing safety.

  12. When I read the story, I realized that the pilot had two mistakes, and ATC had one mistake. The pilot's first mistake was that he departed two hours late. He was supposed to depart at 3:30 p.m, but he departed at 5:30 p.m. This was a really big mistake. Actually, he knew the tempature droped continuosly after the mid-afternoon. Why he flied even though he knew it, I did not understand. If I were him, I would not take-off late anymore, and I would wait the next day for departure. His second mistake is being irresponsible. While I was reading the text, I was shocked when I found out the pilot's thought. He hoped to avoid icing until after the stop at Gary. He just hoped. That was really nonsensical bacause he did not think bad things. For example, he did not think if the whether was not be good, what he could do. If I were him, I would do a nice plan for the flight, and I obeyed it. The last mistake was that ATC was indecisive. It said different places for landing to the pilot, and confused his mind.

  13. As you know that the aviation is not easy job and it would never ever forgive. Until I thought a few years ago that the aviation is easy job, but I realized that it is very difficult job and it never forgive any error when I entered within aviation . Time is very important in aviation like the task. I was happy when I understood that any accident did not happen at end of the task. Firstly, I do not understand that why the pilot did not check the air condition and headwing while he had been delayed for two hours. Secondly, why ATC did not deeply check air conditions and headwing of Kankakee where the ATC said to land to the pilot. If I were the pilot, I would never fly late. If I have to fly, I check the air conditions and then, as long as the air condition and headwing are good, I woğld fly.

  16. If I were him,I would not fly when the weather is in this condition because I can not take a risk for my daughters life. Before the flight,I would consider all of the harmful situation for the flight and according to my considering I would not fly. However if I really have to fly ,I would firstly pray the God. Then,I would realize all of the condition and I would try to find logical solution for the this kind of bad situation.I would also contact to atc to help for the problems.I would try to stay calm and my daughters, too. After all of these preventions I will arrive safely.

  17. First of all, I want say that when I read this text I was shocked. Because there are many the pilotage mistakes. This pilot planned his plane’s take off time at 3.30 pm, but his children did not come on time. They came at 5.30 pm and the weather was getting worse in two hours. If I were this pilot I would cancel this flight because bad weather is not available for flight. I would not take a risk. The pilot did not get in contact with ATC regularly. I would always communicate with ATC. If there is a problem I check this problem for solution. Finally, If I were the pilot I would not fly in this situation. I would never do as the pilot made mistakes.
