Reading Journal 1 - Trading Places

Dear Flight Training students,

Reading Journal 1 - TRADING PLACES

I'd like to assign the first reading journal task from the periodical Flight Training 03.12.

I'd like you write the story "Trading Places" from the father's point - of -view in 150-200 words. In other words, if the father in the story told what had happened that day, how would he do that?
You may want to begin with a sentence like this: "I was with my son in a rented Cessna 172 on a Friday night headed to Las Vegas..."
Your journals are due next Wednesday (March, 13).

Late journal entries will not be accepted. All journal entries should be done on the web. Pen-and-paper submissions will be returned.

Looking forward to reading the father's account of the story,
Have a great week!

  1. In a dark Friday night,we were flying from California to Las Vegas. It was my first flight in a small aircraft. My son,Tommy, had taken his private pilot licence 1 month before our trip. Therefore,I was very proud of my son because of being in this journey.Suddenly,Tommy started to try some devices. He seemed very stressful.Aircraft's taillight became more and more dark.I was trying to be patient but in that situation nobody can calm down. The plane sauntering in the darkness. We finally decided to go back our starting point.Tommy was pretending to disguise the problem we had encountered, but I could feel he was really afraid of the landing. When we approching the airport our electrocity was completely drained. Tommy held the yoke carefully and stopped the engine to slow down.I noticed that Tommy was unexpectedly calm. The plane slowed down and silently touched the ground. My son succeeded this hard task by himself. This made me more stronger because of having such a talented boy.

Don’t worry” I said to him.I knew he just got private pilot certificate last week but the real situation was going to train him more.Although now he was not the best pilot,he could shown me a bravery. He decided to turn back to California. After that,it liked blessing from the God,radio went on working. He was enthusiastic to connect to the tower. After the plane landed to airport,I softly slapped to his shoulder and said “ You ! 1. Good interpretation of the story. However you have quite a lot of grammar mistakes. Check that every sentence has a subject and a verb that agree with each other and use paragraphs to separate the main sections.

  5. On Friday night, I and my son was in a rented Cessna leaving for Las Vegas. We departed from Long Beach, California. It was about 45 minutes after taking off, I felt some strange things. I look out the airplane’s window and saw the instrument panel lights began dimming. I kept thinking positively as if there wasn’t a problem. Five minutes later, I listened my son trying to speak with the air traffic controller but he looked very frightened. It seemed there was not any response from the air traffic tower. The time was just about two weeks after getting his private pilot license so he did not have more experience in flight. However, I was sure that he could control this problems. He tried to use the airplane’s instruments to define the direction for going back to our departing place. I kept praying as long as the trip. Meanwhile, my son said that Long Beach Tower had known our coming. I didn’t believe until seeing a solid-green light in the direction of the airport tower even I didn’t know what it meant. I closed my eyes and felt the airplane touching the ground. Finally, we could land safely.

  6. I remember that day when the sun is not shining and it rains like caming down from glass. It was friday darkness when we were in Cessna and going to Las Vegas for gambling. My son insisted to fly the plane although he was inexperienced pilot. Well I trusted him and when the wind started to blow our plane away, I feared. I was scared but my son bravely used the Cessna and said:"I seen the worst". Then I realised that some of our devices got broken because of the static field. That was bad because it was dark and we cant see our way however my son used his lucky compass and found his way. When we landed I said :"My son I am proud of you." That night I was scared but also I trusted my son because I know he can do it. Also it has worth all the trip by itself.

  8. As I remember, we were flying from Long Beach, California to Las Vegas with my son, Timothy, in a dark Friday night. Before our trip, he just had taken his PPL(Private Pilot Licence) one month ago. This was our first flight with a rented Cessna 172. For this reason, I was proud of my son due to the being in that voyage. Abruptly, something miscarriaged in the aircraft, and Timothy was so apprehensive. But unfortunately, I couldn’t give a hand him because I don’t know anything about an aircraft. In addition to these, aircraft’s taillight became more and more dark. Despite of the bad conditions, I relied on my son. On the other hand, Timothy launched to attempt some devices. After that Timothy made decision to fly back to take-off point. While landing I could see that Timothy was worrying about himself. My son landed on the airfield obviously. He seemed estranged from trouble. Later, we entered the Long Beach Airport and bought some foods to eat. On the other side, Timothy made a phone call to Long Beach workers to render. After all that I was very appreciate to have such a good son.

  10. I was with my son and his friend Brad Bruno in a rented Cessna 172 on a Friday night, headed to Las Vegas. My son have just graduated from his Flight Training School, so he was flying the Cessna. We took off from Long Beach, California and was planning to go Las Vegas to see the city at night and the ropes at the casinos.. Cessna 172 is a 4 seated aircraft. There are two seats front for the pilots, and two seats behind for passengers. Since I was calling the shotgun, I got to sit in the front with my son. I did it on purpose, because I wanted to be close to my son.
According to my son, we were not even halfway to Las Vegas, looking at the taillights. Garmin 1000 which is the control panel in Cessna 172, has failed. I heard the ATC's voice became more distant and off-centre. After that, my son looked at me like he was asking for help. However, I have no knowledge about aviation. Therefore, I could not hide my fear, and I guess he noticed my nervousness on my face. I saw Brad was nervous as well. My son started to look at the switches on the left side of the control panel. He cycled one of the switches, but I appeared to be disappointed. I assumed that whatever he tried was not successful. He looked at nervously, again asking for an idea. He relieved us by saying that as long as the we had gas, the engine would continue to run. That was a relief, but I was still anxious, because of the failure of the Garmin 1000 and the other electrical equipments. We decided to go back to Long Beach. My son seemed like he knew what he was doing. We turned back and landed safely to the runway of Long Beach. I was very shocked that I couldn't even realize we were at the touchdown. I asked my son to correct the situation. We landed safely. I bought dinner for my son and Brad. My son called the ATC to thank them. Apparently, they helped us, even though we had a communication failure. I rely on my son after that day the incident.

  14. I was with my son in a rented Cessna 172 on a Friday night headed to Las Vegas. I was riding shotgun. We were not even halfway to Las Vegas suddenly; there was something wrong. I am not a pilot and I did not understand anything what was wrong in the plane. My son looked over to me for assistance, I was more nervous than my son. My son’s friend whose name is Brad began to move around nervously in the Cessna’s backseat and he poked his head up front, looking to hear some reassuring news. A forced smile on my face. I have no control, nothing substantial to offer to the situation. I had trusted my son for so long. There were no more things to do except trusting my son. I said ‘’is that it? We are on the ground? Yes, we were on the ground. My son said to me ‘’I had given him the power that evening’’ and I bought us something to eat. My son called Long Beach Tower thanking them for their help. I drove my truck all night to Las Vegas.

  16. My son had got his private pilot certificate a week before. His pal Brad and I had decided to be with him in his first cross-country flight. Then we rented a Cessna 172. On a Friday night we had taken off from Long Beach to Las Vegas. Everything was ok, we were about the halfway to Las Vegas, and then we had encountered a problem. At first, the lights of the 172 began damning, then the plane became completely dark. I and Brad were getting nervous. But my son had told us that the engine will continue to run as long as we had gas. I asked myself why we started this trip when my son was fresh out of flight school. But that was it and I hoped to get on the ground safely. Then my son’s talk with ATC gave a result. We had sawn the green lights coming from the airport and that was good signal… Then it finished, we were on the ground. Then we had a dinner and I drove all night to Las Vegas.
